Online sessions

To make the most of your online sessions, you will need to download the Zoom app to your device (preferably a computer or laptop, as the desktop app provides best audio settings. A tablet or phone are sufficient, but a desktop will give you the best functionality for sessions).

If you already have the Zoom app, that’s great! Please make sure you have the most recent update installed. You will need to make sure a few changes are made to your audio settings before the session to give us optimum sound (use the guide on this page).

You will also need to make sure once in the meeting that the top left rectangular button on your main screen says ‘Turn on original sound’ – meaning that no audio is suppressed. Once these settings have been adjusted, they should remain the same on your account unless you change them between meetings!

To make your coaching sessions really efficient, here are a few more tips:

  1. Make sure your devices are charged! Obvious I know, but we’ve all been there!

  2. Set up your device ready for the Zoom lesson with five minutes to spare! Ideally in a quiet room where you will not be disturbed, with the camera directly in front of you, positioned so I can see your head, shoulders, and upper torso. You may need to move around during the session, in warm up exercises for example, so be mindful of your space.

  3. You may like some water, a note pad and pen if you would like to take notes. You can always record the session via Zoom, or if you would like to record the audio to your phone you’re also welcome to do that, as some find it valuable to recap exercises during the week.

  4. If you are wanting to sing along to a track or accompaniment in the session, you will need to use a separate device to play this from, a phone for example. Playing music through the device you are using for the Zoom call will mean I won’t be able to hear your voice clearly! If this is a problem, please let me know ahead of time.

  5. If possible, keep the streaming elsewhere in the house to a minimum during your lesson time, as this will optimise bandwidth.

How to adjust your Zoom audio settings

  • Open the Zoom desktop app

  • Click on your profile image / initials in the top right and choose ‘Settings’

  • Choose ‘Audio’ in the menu on the left

  • Adjust the following settings:

    • Turn off ‘Automatically adjust microphone volume’

    • Set Suppress background noise to Low

    • Turn on ‘Original sound for musicians’

Frequently Asked Questions

  • You may like to bring some water with you, and a device to play any backing tracks you may need, or hard copies of lyrics/music if required/if this is helpful.

If you can have a song prepared that you would like to sing/work on, or an area of technique or vocal health in mind to explore, that would be a good starting point. If you have no preference for song choice or application, or feel a bit stuck with this don't worry, I'm happy to work on the fly!

  • Send me an email – vocalperformancecoaching@gmail.com – and we can reschedule.

Please note that the cancellation policy is 24 hours – cancellations made with 24 hours notice or less will still be charged.
